WinGD DualFuel Technology
With WinGD's headquarters located in Winterthur, Switzerland, the company continues the long tradition of the Sulzer Diesel Engine business founded in 1898. WinGD is a leading developer of low-speed Gas and Diesel 2-stroke engines used for propulsion power in merchant shipping. These engines are utilized for the propulsion of all types of deep-sea ships world-wide, such as oil and gas tankers, bulk carriers, car carriers, general cargo ships and container ships.
Deep-sea going marine vessels are driven by 2-stroke engines mainly as single prime mover. The main reason for usage of this engine type in these vessels is, despite the classical argument of fuel cost, the total weight and volume of this drivetrain including energy reservoir achieving by far the best ratio of transported goods per consumed energy. Additionally, the two-stroke engine is known for its overall simplicity, durability and maintainability.
With the well-known global need to decrease the carbon emissions as well as all combustion-based emissions, the 2-stroke engines have been further developed by replacing heavy diesel oil by liquified gas as fuel. The technology is based on the lean-burn Otto-cycle combustion process in order to exploit the full emission reduction potential of gas as a fuel and thus fully comply with IMO Tier III emission limits without any exhaust gas after treatment.
WinGD and IDSC work together in projects ranging from high-level to low-level optimal control.
